Herford, Siegfried Wedgwood

Siegfried Wedgwood Herford was a Private in the 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 28 January 1916 at the age of 24.

He is buried in Brown’s Road Cemetery Festubert.

Son of Charles and Marie, 5 Parkfield Road, Didsbury, Manchester. The 1911 census shows Charles as a Professor in English at Manchester University, and Siegfried as an Engineering student at the same University.

Siegfried went to France 15 November 1915. The Battalion war diary for the 28th January 1916, records “In the morning, enemy opened heavy bombardment of Regent Street and communication trenches lasting from 11.30am to 1.15 pm, doing much damage and destroying several dug-outs”.

Regent Street was a British reserve line trench about 3km North West of Lens , Northern France.
