J W Smiley is recorded as a member of the FRCC and known to have been lost at sea when R M S Leinster was sunk. His name is not recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
R M S Leinster was torpedoed and sunk by German UB 123 on 10th October 1918. She was sailing from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead carrying almost 800 persons, some 500 of whom were military personnel. Recent research shows that some 550 passengers and crew died.
John W Smiley is shown on the 1891 census, aged 18, as the son of John and Lavinia Smiley 24 Poplar Rd Oxton, Birkenhead, he was clerk to a cotton broker.
