Turner, George Corrall

George Corrall Turner, Captain 2/6th Battalion West Yorkshire Reg.

Killed in action on 13 September 1917, aged 32.

He is buried in Favreuil British Cemetery.

Son of John and Sabina Turner, ‘Newlands’, The Grove, Ilkley. Educated at Sedbergh and Leeds University, worked for three years at Gilbert, Gilkes and Gordon’s then went to British Columbia.

As part of the 62nd Division they were holding the front line North of Bapaume when, according to the Westmorland Gazette: “They came under intense barrage, and a little before 5.00 am the enemy attacked in force, and greatly due to the splendid example set by Captain Turner, his company successfully repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. He was killed instantaneously by a shell just after leaving a post where he had been leading a hand to hand fight.

2/6th West Yorkshire were holding the line as part of 4th Army. The exact whereabouts cannot be identified but Favreuil is a few kilometres North of Bapaume.
