Speyside

Strathspey is a wide, well forested valley astride the boundary between the Highland and Grampian regions of Scotland. To the north west it is bounded by the Monadhliath, wild, unfrequented and comparatively rounded mountains, including three Munros and a number of Corbetts. To the southern and eastern sides are the Cairngorm mountains, containing five of Scotland’s 4,000 ft Munros. This range is the largest area of high land in the United Kingdom, experiencing at times arctic weather conditions, but also giving the opportunity for exploration of its extensive plateaux and wonderful corries.

The traverse of the 4,000 ft summits in one expedition is a classic of its kind, although it should not be undertaken lightly, especially in winter conditions.

Karn House, one of the club’s two Scottish huts, is situated in Aviemore, from where it is feasible to access not just the Monadhliath and Cairngorm ranges but also, a little further afield, Creag Meagaidh, the Drumochter Munros and, more remotely, the Ben Alder area.
