Southern Fells

Area Details

This group of high fells is bounded by Wasdale in the west and by Langstrath, Great Langdale and Yewdale in the east.  The main massifs are Scafell, Bow Fell, and the Coniston fells.  More outlying tops in the Ulpha and Dunnerdale fells are included here extending to Black Combe.  There are also lower tops east of Coniston as well as Gummers How which is east of Windermere.

The higher fells are all rugged volcanic rock giving dramatic scenery with steep crags (much favoured by rock climbers), rocky tops and exhilarating ridges.  In contrast, the lower fells in the south west are rounded and grassy but have a special appeal to those who like solitude in the hills.
