The clearly defined boundaries of this compact area are the river valleys of the Derwent and Cocker. The whole territory is fine walking country with many splended ridges and some little known corners. To AW these were the most delectable of all the fells.
Most of the underlying rocks in this area are Skiddaw Slate which is not much exposed here but is responsible for the smoothness of surface and the absence of tarns. Only towards Borrowdale are volcanic rocks evident; nowhere more so than at Castle Crag, the only top below 300m to be included in The Lakeland Fells because of its special mountain characteristics.
