South-West Buttress

GR: 225 082

A fairly good discovery of mainly granitic slabby rock. Easily seen from Broad Crag looking north across the combe, as a bell-shaped crag immediately right of a small watercourse. From the north, the top of the crag appears as a slabby knoll, lying a mere 100 metres south-west of the indefinite grassy col south of the Great End summit slopes.

The crag is divided into two faces by a blunt nose, South-West and North-West. The South-West Face is a compact wall with a line of thin cracks in the centre and an obvious V-groove just to their right. Just right again easier rocks form a Descent Rake. The North-West Face is higher, and is where slabs, ribs and grooves predominate

Dolmen Buttress

To the left (N) of Long Pike, a wide scree fan supports a cirque of broken crags. 100 metres further left, and at a lower level, a fine cracked, south-facing wall slants up the north side of a ramp/gully. A major feature is an impressive 8 metre high pinnacle (The Dolmen) at its foot, (GR 224 084).

Red Buttress

300 metres left (N) of the top of Dolmen Buttress is an excellent buttress; comprising three fine aretes divided by two wide cracks, (GR 224 085).

Shelf Crag

150 metres down and right (South) of Red Buttress, a series of walls and ridges rise above a comfortable grassy shelf, ending at the precipitous gully at the left-hand end of Dolmen Buttress.
The first buttress reached when moving right (S) along the shelf, cairn, is characterized by a chimney groove on the left and a fine arete and flanking wall on its right.
