CLIMBING WALLS IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

The above is a list of the various climbing walls currently available in the Lakes area.

Climbing walls have been developed over the years in this area - the first walls were in the late 1950's being incorporated in some of the new schools at that time, including Ullswater School, in Penrith and Wyndham School, in Egremont. The brick built walls were seen as an introduction to climbing and not for training - many indeed (including the writer) probably had their first intro on such a way though the crags were the real introduction.

Walls developed with the likes of Workington Sports Hall and Pelham Hall, Charlotte Mason, the chipped "super-wall" at Trinity School (Carlisle), then the first wall at the Sands (Carlisle) and the interesting Cockermouth wall. The Barrow, Carlisle and Ambleside lads honed their abilities as well as the likes of Dougie Hall and Duncan Booth to Eve Prickett. Wall developments followed and now the likes of the new Sands wall, Keswick Climbing Centre, Wyndham (Egremont), Eden (Penrith) and the Lakeland Climbing Centre (Kendal) give the area a superb selection to choose from throughout the area.
