Membership Application Guidance Notes

Advice on completing the Membership Application Form

To apply for associate membership you need to:

  • Attend a minimum of three meets.
  • Have a Proposer and Seconder who can vouch for your abilities and your suitability as a member.

Both Proposer and Seconder need to be full members.

In the form complete the sections, describe in broad terms your experience and give specific examples from the last five years.

If you are a climber state the grade that you lead at, and whether or not the climbs are multi-pitch, single pitch, traditionally protected or bolt protected. Give examples from the Lake District and further afield including any foreign trips.

If you are a mountaineer/mountain walker mention mountains that you have ascended in the Lake District and further afield, referring to conditions of ascent: e.g. whether under snow and ice or summer conditions. Include Alpine ascents and multi-day back-packing trips. If you have completed the Munros or other ranges let us know. Please ensure that the examples of your winter experience describe when an ice axe and crampons were used.

State the three meets you have attended.

Indicate which huts you ave used.

If using the four supporter name the supporters, see below.

Advice for Proposer and Seconder on completing the Support Form

Proposers and Seconders, who must be full members, are requested to support proposals only for genuinely strong and competent candidates. Advice should be given as necessary to the applicant.

Mountain Walkers and Mountaineers

  • You are self-reliant in the mountains in both winter and summer conditions.
  • You have the requisite fitness for long mountain days.
  • You don’t treat your compass as a fashion accessory.

Climbers

  • You are safe and competent at your chosen grade and are happy to morph from crag rat to mountain goat.

The Proposer and Seconder should have read the Membership Bye-laws and note that Proposers should be aware that they have a responsibility for their applicants during the period of Associate Membership. This includes payment of the first subscription (if this has not been paid) and the applicant’s future conduct as an Associate Member.

Statements by the Proposer and Seconder should include the following detail such as:

  • How long and how well they have known the applicant.
  • The extent of activities completed when accompanying the applicant on the crags and mountains.
  • When they have accompanied the applicant on meets and any hut visits.
  • Why the candidate should be considered for membership.
