The Club was contacted by BBC 2 in connection with a series of programmes planned to be shown in spring 2018 about the Lake District. There will be four programmes covering Windermere, Coniston, Wasdale and Borrowdale. The Coniston programme will include John Ruskin, Donald Campbell and Red Deer together with the FRCC and its formation at the Sun Hotel and climbing on Dow Crag. Paul Grennan is the producer and Paul Rose is the presenter of the series. After initial communications and visit to Dow Crag, with Ron Kenyon, it was arranged for filming on Dow Crag of club members Nina Stirrup and her grandfather David Miller, who was on the first ascent of the classic route of Nimrod (E1) on Dow Crag in 1962.
10th August was chosen and a large group with cameramen and helpers made their way to the Dow Crag for the filming. It was initially sunny but became colder and windier during the day. It was decided to initially film the interview between Paul Rose and Nina and David which included comparisons between equipment used now and that used (or lack of equipment – two slings!) in the 1960s.
Nina then lead Paul up the classic Murray’s Route being filmed from various angles including by a drone.
The filming took most of the day but the team descended happy with what was “in the can” and we can now look forward to programme in 2018.
