The Fell and Rock Memorial Round

The Fell and Rock Memorial Round is a journey through the mountains and the history of the Lake District. You’ll cover at least 20km, but don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance, it’s at least 1,200m of ascent and descent over true mountainous terrain

To complete the Fell and Rock Memorial Round visit, in a continuous journey,  the memorial plaques on the summit of Great Gable and at the bridge over the River Liza Ennerdale , starting and finishing at the gate to club’s hut, Birkness, in Buttermere

Depending on route choice the round is approximately 20km, 1,200m

Rules of the Fell and Rock Remembrance Round

  1. Start and finish at the gate to the club’s Buttermere Hut, Birkness. There is no parking here. You will need to park in Buttermere village car parks or, at Gatesgarth and walk along Buttermere to the start.
  2. Stay on public rights of way or open access land.
  3. Visit, in whichever order you prefer, the Ennerdale memorial bridge and the plaque on the summit of Great Gable.
  4. Record your route on a tracking app eg Strava.
  5. Be AdventureSmart  The round is not suitable for novice hill-goers; ensure you are properly equipped for the day, have adequate food and equipment, are fit enough to undertake the challenge and leave a route plan with a friend or relative.
  6. The Fell and Rock Memorial Round must be completed in a single journey, you can however take as long as you like.
  7. Have fun; but take a moment or two to reflect on the sacrifice that our fellow mountaineers made which ultimately has led to the freedoms of life and freedoms of access that we have today.
  8. Register your round to be added to the finisher board by messaging membership@frcc.co.uk with your name, age, date of the round, a screenshot of your tracking app and a brief description of your day. Photos of your round also welcomed. Additionally you can add your photos and stories on the Fell and Rock Remembrance Round Facebook Group.

Checkpoints:

Start: The gate into Birkness , Buttermere NY185160

Park in Buttermere Village or at Gatesgarth; walk along the shores of Buttermere. If approaching from Gatesgarth pass through the tunnel, continue through a pedestrian gate then turn right/ uphill across the pasture and you will see the gate. From Buttermere turn left before reaching the tunnel
