Covid 19, Nesting Birds and Climbing Restrictions

Over the years a very good system has evolved that places climbing restrictions on certain crags, scrambles and boulders in the Lake District. The restrictions are often shown by on-site signs but not always and it is important to check the Regional Access Database before going to a crag. These restrictions are normally in place to cover the nesting period. They may be removed earlier if the birds have moved on, or extended if the chicks fledge later.

The restrictions have been reviewed each year with agreements primarily between the BMC, Natural England and the LDNPA. This process is also supported by the FRCC, John Muir Trust, The National Trust and other volunteers. The restrictions are promoted through the BMC Regional Access Database (RAD) (The App is best) and the FRCC website. Updates are also placed on the UKC access forum when possible.

This has sometimes had a detrimental effect on the routes and crags but climbers have generally accepted these restrictions and that the birds have priority over the chance of climbing there.

With the restriction imposed by Covid 19 there have been fewer climbers on the crags and people on the fells at crucial times and birds have been taking the opportunity to nest in places not previously observed.

All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law (the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as amended by the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000). Damaging, destroying or disturbing the nests, birds or eggs is an offence. Schedule 1 species (the subject of the majority of BMC agreed restrictions) are especially vulnerable and subject to additional special protection.

Where any new locations of nest on crags are reported then signs are being erected on approaches to crags and details shown on the BMC Regional Access Database (RAD).

Recently a raven’s nest was discovered at Raven Crag, Walthwaite and this is signed accordingly – this is currently the only crag with a restriction in Langdale.

We would therefore ask climbers –
• If you are planning to go climbing at a particular crag, check the RAD and FRCC website first to see if there are any restrictions on that crag.
• If you are going to a particular crag and you see a sign indicating a restriction – please go elsewhere !
• If you see someone else climbing there (i.e. ignoring the signs) point out to them that they, too, should go elsewhere.
• If you see a nest or are aware of disturbing nesting birds – again please go elsewhere !
• If you become aware of a nest please check the RAD and if the nest is not mentioned please contact the local BMC Access Rep.

We know this can be an annoyance but the crag will be there on another day and there are so few restricted crags that there are always plenty of other options.

Check out the BMC website for more information about “Nesting Birds Advice” and “Respect the Wild – don’t trash your room” at this time!
