King of the Castle Fell Race Meet

The YHA King of the Castle is an annual uphill time trial in Borrowdale, Lake District, covering 2.5 km with 200 m of climb.
The Meet will be organised around this on the Sunday, but of course the race is not compulsory!

Race Overview

The YHA King of the Castle (KOTC) is a unique uphill-only fell race held at YHA Borrowdale, Rosthwaite, Keswick, England. Participants run from the hostel bar to the war memorial on Castle Crag, a short but steep climb, making it a challenging and exhilarating start to the year

2027: 3rd January, 13:00 start.

Course Details

  • Distance: 2.5 km (1.6 miles)
  • Elevation Gain: 200 m (656 ft)
  • Format: Individual time trial; each runner starts separately and is professionally timed with live results displayed in the hostel
  • Category: AS (adult short)
  • Minimum Age: 18 years; no junior races
