July 2026 marks the bicentenary of the first ascent of Pillar Rock in Ennerdale; this incredibly bold solo ascent of what we now call The Old West Route (150m M ***) by local shepherd John Atkinson is arguably the true start of rock climbing in England. To coincide with the anniversary FRCC has produced a supplement, written by Pillar aficionado Stephen Reid, detailing the many new climbs that have been put up on Pillar Rock and other crags in Ennerdale over the past 20 years. This supplement updates Gable & Pillar (2007) with over 70 new rock climbs and notes on some existing climbs. The big reveal is the development of the high crags behind Pillar Rock, known as Great Doup, into a top class mixed climbing venue that readily comes into condition and offers over 30 routes between grades I and VII (7), these are in print for the first time in this supplement.
