Roadworks affecting access to Beetham Cottage

ROADWORKS ON THE A592 AT KIRKSTONE PASS  2023

A member has helpfully drawn attention to the following road closure programme which will facilitate road works on the Pass:

13/02/23 onwards 3 weeks Daytime Traffic Signals
(CCTV surveys, drain repairs, retaining wall repairs, new signs, carriageway haunching + other works)

06/03/23 onwards 4 weeks Full Road Closure No. 1
(new drainage crossings and associated works, carriageway resurfacing works, boundary wall repairs etc)

05/06/23 onwards 4 weeks Full Road Closure No. 2
(safety barrier works etc)

11/09/23 onwards 2+ weeks Full Road Closure No. 3
(carriageway reconstructions and patching)

01/03/24 onwards 3 weeks Full Road Closure No. 4
(carriageway surfacing and reinstatement works)

Full details are on Cumbria CC’s website at:

https://new.cumbria.gov.uk/parking-streets-and-transport/streets-roads-and-pavements/road-maintenance-closures-and-improvements/plans-projects-and-improvements/safer-roads-a592

There is a signed (& very long) diversion via Dunmail Raise going north or south but anyone using the M6 to reach Beetham Cottage going north would be well advised to stay on the M6 until Penrith and approach from the North during closures and travel early .

In 2022 when the A592 from Hartsop north was receiving similar attention it became clear that full closures predicted by Cumbria CC were not always in force. Commonly restrictions were lifted or reduced (closures became lights restrictions only) at weekends and overnight. This may occur on the Kirkstone section BUT some overnight work is definitely planned so relying on closures being lifted may involve disappointment. I will try to ensure reliable information is sent by e-news and posted on the website and at the hut.
