The Old East Route 70m M

More vegetated and not as good as most of the other Pillar Moderates, but included for historical completeness. Start as for Slab and Notch Climb.

1 25m. Follow Slab and Notch up onto the slab and cross it. At the far side take the right crack but quit it for the Ledge, which enables a traverse right onto the rib of the Curtain.

2 30m. Descend grassy rock to the Steep Grass and traverse this to an easy-angled rock/juniper slab on the right. Traverse right across this, keeping to the rock, to a point where it turns a corner.

3 15m. Traverse a few metres right, under a groove, to join the last moves of The Old West Route and gain the summit via this.

Soloed by Stephen Reid, 23/4/2021 but has all been climbed before. Pitch 1 Slab and Notch Easy Way in 1863, Pitch 2 (in the opposite direction) by WP Haskett Smith in 1882 (as discovered recently from an old newspaper article), and Pitch 3 by John Atkinson in 1826. Pitch 2 was really crucial to the traverse so the date of the first ascent should be 1882.
