Wild Swimming: Birkness 16/17 September

We have a met a lot of people who are curious about swimming outside in lakes and tarns in the Lake district. The meet is designed to accommodate people who are experienced swimmers or those who are interested in trying it for the first time. Wild swimming has a degree of risk and should we cannot guarantee safety. While it is important for you to understand that we cannot take responsibility completely for your safety, it is much safer when you are joined by other people. The lake is a short walk from the hut and a hot shower/fire. For longer swims a wetsuit and tow float is recommended. Due to the unique nature of the flora and fauna in the lakes it is important that wetsuits are cleaned between lakes so as not to spread organisms.

The plan for the weekend would be as follows:

Meet up Friday night and settle in and meet people of different swimming abilities

Saturday morning there will be an opportunity to swim in the lake. You might choose to do one of the following:

  • Shore swim and paddle to get used to the conditions.
  • Swim across the lake with more able swimmers.
  • Swim the circumference of the lake with experienced swimmers.

The first two swims will have a kayakers/paddleboarders alongside to assist anyone if they need it. The 3rd swim will be reliant upon experienced swimmers meeting up and swimming together.

Saturday afternoon

Opportunity to explore the lake at your own pace

Sunday morning

There will be an opportunity for a sunrise swim at 6.00am for those brave enough.
