Another Waynwright Day – Saturday 31st August 2019

A unique event to promote environmentally sustainable living

Amy Bray, 16, is launching her new environmental charity, Another Way, on Saturday 31st August 2019 by asking volunteers and supporters to climb one of the 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District to demonstrate unity towards the health of ourselves and our planet.

The event is called Another Waynwright Day and will feature a unique range of activities on the fells to promote individual and collective change for living in environmentally sustainable ways. It will be fun and educational, bringing together individuals and organisations who all want to see a better future, where biodiversity thrives alongside the human race.

Activities include a Fell running challenge, the RSBP demonstrating moth varieties in Mardale, Brathay Trust leading a creative sculpture group, wild art, nature friendly farming methods, compost making from bracken, peat restoration, an 85th birthday quiz for Friends of the Lake District, Windermere school environmental activities, art and poetry, cake sharing (no waste and no single use packaging!), 2 choirs, a brass band with specially composed music, folk music and many others.

Amy herself will be walking up Helvellyn, along with a life size sculpture made specifically for her and Another Way by a Cumbrian sculpture artist to represent the challenge we as a race are facing. Amy hopes Mountain Rescue will be able to carry this to the summit for us on the day.

Mike Berners-Lee the author of ‘There’s no planet B’ has produced an environmental guide for the event to help reduce the carbon footprint of the event and also to help spread the information more widely. All participants will be asked to collect litter during the day and to follow main footpaths. Fix the Fells and the Wainwright Society are also supporting Amy.

In addition, Another Way are arranging for children to plant a tree for every event participant. Up to 1700 trees will be planted in Matterdale in the Autumn as part of supporting nature and relieving flood and drought problems. A selection of the 20 schools and scout groups that Amy has given educational sessions and talks to in the last year will be invited to plant these trees and to learn more from specialists about the benefits they will bring.

We are aiming to have supporters at the top of all 214 fells at 1pm on the day, and for all participants to publish their photos, stories and videos on social media.

Despite being only 6 months old, Another Way is already heavily engaged in supporting projects relating to regenerative agriculture, consumer awareness, zero-waste food shops as well as leading a single use plastic free Grasmere campaign and advising the local council on ways to reduce waste and improve recycling. The charity’s wings are spreading rapidly and entirely through volunteer efforts – there are no paid staff – this is about bringing people together who wish for a better future for themselves and their children.

Please support Amy by signing up as an Ambassador or supporter for the event on the 31st August at www.another-way.org.uk and share with your friends. Even if you are working that day you can join in by following Another Way on social media (links via the website) and posting photos and messages of support whilst you are helping others or just having fun yourselves.
