Closure of Kirkstone Pass

From Humph – Beetham Warden
Will all members note that the pass will be closed to through traffic from Monday 4 March 2024 for 4 Weeks – to 27th. The definitive closure notice has now been published formally
The contractors take steps to stop access – it’s a serious H&S issue for them so please don’t expect your trip to be irrelevant to their work and go round etc. They do NOT accept pedestrian access etc but you can walk up the pass on the path on the opposite side of the beck to the road which is not affected by the closure.
Having said that there is a new important issue:
The road closure starts at the Hartsop turn – so 150m before you get to the hut travelling south. This has not been a problem before because all work was south of the Brotherswater Inn and the Sykeside camp site BUT it could be there will be some resurfacing (the work now being scheduled) from the Hartsop junction and therefore it affects the hut.
It seems unlikely to me but the words written are not clear and the people involved really don’t seem to know and can’t answer simple direct questions.
So, in practical terms, you should be able to gain normal access albeit from the Hartsop side of Beetham but if you have any interruption, other than driving round the barrier, please let me know.
If you are easily disorientated stay in bed – the sign that was there through the last closure said access was available to the “Sykeside” caravan and Camping site!!
Life is an adventure – Westmorland and Furness Council want it to be more of a surprise than I can deal with from my holiday in the sun.
